Commemorating World Health Day: Advancing Health Equity for Children and Adolescents in East and Southern Africa
Johannesburg, South Africa – April 7, 2026 — As the world marks World Health Day, the Regional Interagency Task Team on Children and HIV (RIATT-ESA) reaffirms its commitment to promoting equitable access to health services for children, adolescents, and young people across East and Southern Africa.
This year’s commemoration comes at a time when many young people, particularly those living with or affected by HIV, continue to face significant barriers to accessing quality, inclusive, and youth-friendly health services. These challenges are often compounded by stigma, discrimination, gender inequality, and limited community-based support systems.
RIATT-ESA continues to play a critical role in strengthening regional responses through evidence-based advocacy, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Working with governments, civil society, youth networks, and regional bodies, the organization supports the development of policies and programmes that prioritize the health and well-being of children and adolescents.
“Our work is grounded in the belief that health is a fundamental human right,” said a RIATT-ESA Programme Manager, Ms Roseline Hwati. “We are committed to ensuring that no child or adolescent is left behind, especially those most vulnerable and marginalized.”
Over the years, RIATT-ESA has contributed to advancing knowledge and practice on pediatric and adolescent HIV, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and mental health. Through research, policy dialogue, and community engagement, the organization has helped amplify the voices of young people and strengthen systems that respond to their needs.
On this World Health Day, RIATT-ESA calls on governments, partners, and communities to:
• Invest in youth-friendly and inclusive health systems
• Address stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings
• Strengthen community-based health and social support services
• Promote meaningful youth engagement in health decision-making
